Quick answer: Muay Thai shorts are sized by your waist (S fits 26–28 in / 66–71 cm, up to 2XL at 38–42 in / 97–107 cm). Boxing gloves are sized by weight: 16 oz is the sparring standard, 10–12 oz suits bag and pad work. Shin guards come in S to XL and should cover you from just below the knee to the top of the foot. Most adults use 4.5 m (180") hand wraps. Between sizes on shorts? Size up.

How to measure: wrap a soft tape around your natural waist, just above the hip bones where Thai shorts sit, snug but not tight. Thai shorts are cut short and wide with an elastic waistband, so if you are between sizes, size up. Brand ranges differ – Kanong lists S 66 cm to XL 81 cm waist, BOON Sport runs from SS to XXXXL depending on the model. Boxing gloves
Glove sizes in ounces describe the weight and padding of the glove, not your hand size. Choose by use first:
| Weight | Best for |
|---|---|
| 8 oz | Competition (check your federation rules) |
| 10 oz | Pad work, bag work, smaller frames |
| 12 oz | All-round training |
| 14 oz | Training and light sparring |
| 16 oz | Sparring standard |
As a rough guide by body weight (your gym's sparring rule always comes first):
| Your weight | Bag and pads | Sparring |
|---|---|---|
| Under 55 kg (120 lb) | 10–12 oz | 14–16 oz |
| 55–75 kg (120–165 lb) | 12–14 oz | 16 oz |
| Over 75 kg (165 lb) | 14–16 oz | 16 oz |
Only want one pair? Choose 14 or 16 oz so you can also spar in them. Your hand should close into a full fist inside the glove with hand wraps on. More detail: 12oz vs 14oz vs 16oz boxing gloves. Browse all boxing gloves.
Shin guards
Most Thai brands size adult shin guards S, M, L and XL – Raja Boxing, Arwut, Fairtex, Thai Battle, Windy and Top King all use this range; BOON Sport also makes XXL, and some Sandee models come in M and L or S/M and L/XL. A good fit means:
- The guard covers your shin from just below the knee to the top of your foot.
- The instep pad sits on top of your foot, not on your ankle.
- With the straps fastened snugly, the guard does not twist to the side or slide down when you kick.
Style matters as much as size: lightweight guards such as the Raja LS-2 Slim and Raja Lightweight V4 suit fast technical sparring; full-coverage guards such as the Raja Standard, Arwut SG3 and Sandee Cool-Tec Boot give more padding for hard sparring; slip-on guards such as the Arwut SGE1 and Sandee Slip-on Competition stay close to the leg. Sizing FAQ
What size Muay Thai shorts should I get?
Measure your waist just above the hip bones and use the chart: S fits a 26-28 in (66-71 cm) waist, M 28-31 in (71-79 cm), L 31-34 in (79-86 cm), XL 34-38 in (86-97 cm) and 2XL 38-42 in (97-107 cm). If you are between sizes, size up.
What size boxing gloves do I need for sparring?
16 oz is the sparring standard in most gyms, whatever your body weight. Some gyms accept 14 oz for lighter fighters in light sparring, so check your gym's rule. For bag and pad work, 10-12 oz suits most people.
How should Muay Thai shin guards fit?
The guard should cover your shin from just below the knee down to the top of your foot, with the instep pad sitting on top of the foot rather than the ankle. With the straps fastened it should not twist or slide when you kick. Most Thai brands size adult shin guards S to XL.
What length hand wraps should I buy?
4.5 m (180 in) suits most adults. 3 m (120 in) suits kids and small hands, and 5 m gives extra wrist and knuckle coverage for large hands.
Do Thai sizes run small?
Often, yes. Thai clothing sizes tend to run smaller than Western sizes, which is why we size shorts by waist measurement rather than your usual S/M/L. Brands also differ, so check the size options on each product page.
